Samantha Keays, a 29-year-old, found solace in music, especially after discovering she had breast cancer. Seeking distraction and mental clarity, she was intrigued by the idea of a new choir called Healing Voices, catering to individuals affected by cancer or caring for those with the disease. Keays felt compelled to join this community of individuals who understood the challenges she faced.
The choir is scheduled to commence rehearsals this Saturday, leading up to a performance on Feb. 15 at St. Mark’s United Church. All proceeds from the event will support Horizon Health Network’s Stay Strong program.
For Keays, connecting with others who shared similar experiences has been a crucial aspect of her journey, particularly since relocating to Saint John without a strong support network. While her partner, Christopher, remained a pillar of support, his work commitments often left her feeling isolated and overwhelmed.
Kelly Galbraith, a former CBC Music producer and choir director, conceived the idea for the Healing Voices choir following her own cancer diagnosis. Galbraith’s passion for music as a coping mechanism during her treatment inspired her to create a space where individuals could find comfort and camaraderie through singing.
The choir’s repertoire, featuring songs like “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “Lean on Me,” revolves around themes of friendship and support. Galbraith believes that the shared experience of singing together fosters a sense of unity and emotional release.
Heather Purcell, a member of another choir, Raise Your Voice, was drawn to Healing Voices after being diagnosed with ovarian and endometrial cancer. Recognizing the value of community during challenging times, Purcell sees singing as a form of therapy that complements her cancer treatment.
Olivia Donovan, a caregiver for her husband battling pancreatic cancer, sees the choir as an opportunity for personal growth and connection with others facing similar struggles. Despite the hardships associated with being a caregiver, Donovan finds solace in the shared experiences and emotional support within the choir.
