A 13-year-old boy is being hailed for rescuing his mother and two younger siblings by swimming for hours to shore after their family was swept out to sea off the coast of Australia. Austin Appelbee managed to swim four kilometers to raise the alarm after encountering difficulties with his family on Friday.
Initially attempting to seek help on an inflatable kayak that was taking on water, Austin eventually abandoned the kayak and removed his life jacket to improve his swimming ability. Despite facing rough seas, he persevered for approximately four hours until he reached the shore and alerted authorities at 6 p.m.
The Appelbee family, vacationing from Perth, found themselves in distress as strong ocean currents and winds pushed them further out to sea while using hired kayaks and paddle boards from their hotel. They were located by a search helicopter at 8:30 p.m., 14 kilometers away from their starting point in Quindalup, Western Australia, after spending up to 10 hours in the water.
Insp. James Bradley commended the bravery and determination of the 13-year-old, emphasizing that Austin’s actions were instrumental in saving his mother and siblings’ lives. Joanne Appelbee expressed the difficulty of sending her eldest child for help while staying behind with the other children, highlighting the emotional turmoil as she awaited assistance.
Despite the challenging circumstances, the family maintained positivity and resilience until their rescue. All four members were examined by medical personnel but did not require hospitalization. Beau, the youngest sibling, experienced numbness in his legs due to the cold, but ultimately, the family reunited safely after the harrowing ordeal.
