The persistent puddle known as Lake Timmicaca in a Tim Hortons parking lot in downtown Hamilton has finally vanished after months of absence. The city has confirmed that the puddle will be permanently gone by 2026 as the property owner, connected to Tim Hortons, has been granted a work permit to fix the storm sewer system under the lot to ensure proper drainage.
According to Dan Smith, the acting director of licensing and bylaw, the property owner has conducted an engineer’s assessment and has hired contractors for the repair work. The official repair is scheduled to commence in early spring 2026 due to weather considerations. Despite no recent complaints about the puddle, city licensing staff will continue to oversee the property until the standing water issue is fully resolved.
Tim Hortons did not provide any comments regarding the water accumulation issue, locally dubbed Lake Timmicaca. The puddle, which used to cover most of the parking lot on John Street S., had been a notable feature for years, attracting attention and inspiring art and discussions among residents.
Hamilton resident Max Rose Begg Goodis, a Lake Timmicaca enthusiast, expressed understanding about the puddle’s disappearance as downtown Hamilton evolves. Goodis mentioned that despite visual landmarks disappearing due to ongoing developments, Lake Timmicaca will always hold a special place in the community’s heart. Quoting lyrics from the song “Closing Time,” Goodis emphasized that every end signifies a new beginning, acknowledging the changing landscape of the city.
