“Invasive Spotted Lanternfly Threatens Canadian Border”

A recent study conducted at the Great Lakes Forestry Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, has highlighted fresh concerns regarding an invasive insect that is steadily approaching the Canadian border. Amanda Roe, a research scientist with Natural Resources Canada stationed at the forestry centre, revealed that spotted lanternfly eggs have shown remarkable resilience to extremely cold temperatures, surviving as low as -25 degrees Celsius. This discovery suggests that winter conditions may not be sufficient to prevent the harmful pest from establishing populations in various parts of Canada.

The spotted lanternfly, an insect native to Asia, is known for its destructive nature as it feeds by piercing trees and plants with its straw-like mouthparts to extract sap. It was initially discovered in the United States in 2014 and has since rapidly spread across the eastern U.S., establishing populations in at least 19 states, including Michigan and New York, as well as communities along Lake Erie.

Olivier Morin, a plant health survey biologist for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, emphasized that the spotted lanternfly poses a significant threat, particularly to grape productions, as it feeds on over 100 plant species. In infested areas of the United States, vineyards and agricultural operations have suffered notable damage due to the insect’s feeding habits, which can reduce crop yields and weaken plants. Additionally, the lanternflies excrete honeydew, a sugary waste that promotes mold growth and covers surfaces.

Amanda Roe pointed out that the insect’s diet includes maple trees, which has raised concerns within Canada’s maple syrup industry. The Ontario Maple Syrup Association has been monitoring the spread of the spotted lanternfly to better understand the potential risks it may present to maple syrup production.

While current research sheds light on the insect’s cold tolerance, Roe highlighted the adaptability of invasive species to new environments over time. She emphasized the role of human activity in the insect’s spread, noting that the spotted lanternfly is adept at hitchhiking by attaching itself to vehicles, cargo, shipping containers, and outdoor equipment for long-distance travel. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has intercepted spotted lanternflies on various shipments and vehicles arriving from the U.S., indicating a looming threat of establishment in Canada.

Morin advised individuals encountering spotted lanternflies to document and report their findings to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to help track and manage potential infestations. He emphasized the importance of proactive measures to slow down the spread of the insect and mitigate its anticipated impacts upon entry into Canada.
