Israel handed over the remains of 15 unidentified Palestinians who died during the Gaza war in the latest exchange of prisoners and detainees with Hamas, marking the final phase of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire plan. The transfer occurred after Israeli forces retrieved the body of Ran Gvili, a hostage held by Hamas for over 840 days following an attack in southern Israel on October 7, 2023.
Families of the Palestinians have been eagerly awaiting news about their loved ones as forensic teams in Israel work to identify the remaining unidentified bodies. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) facilitated the handover, transporting the bodies to Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. According to ICRC spokesperson Pat Griffiths, this handover concludes a months-long operation to facilitate the exchange of living and deceased individuals between the two sides.
A total of 360 bodies of deceased Palestinians, all initially unidentified, have been transferred to Gaza officials, with many showing signs of torture and abuse, as reported by forensic experts in Gaza. Only 99 of the bodies handed over since October have been identified, with the rest being buried in mass graves by health officials in Gaza.
Mu’in Al-Wahidi, head of the special committee at Al-Shifa Hospital, stated that forensic officials will now begin the process of identifying the bodies. This release marks the end of an operation that commenced in October following a truce agreement between Hamas and Israel, which led to the release of hostages and prisoners by both sides.
Julien Lerisson, the ICRC’s regional head, expressed relief at reuniting families with their loved ones and hoped that this process offered closure to those mourning their deceased relatives. The ceasefire deal included the commitment to return all remaining hostages, living and deceased, as part of its initial phase. However, future stages of the agreement are yet to be fulfilled, with disagreements persisting over issues such as Hamas’s disarmament.
Amani Al-Naouq, a Red Cross spokesperson in Gaza, emphasized the importance of maintaining the ceasefire, allowing humanitarian aid into Gaza, and upholding international law. The Gaza Health Ministry reported that Israeli military actions have resulted in at least 490 deaths since the truce began in October, following two years of conflict that severely impacted the Palestinian territory.
The ongoing violence underscores the challenges in implementing the ceasefire agreement and highlights the need for further negotiations to address issues like disarmament and peacekeeping efforts in the region.
