“Kitchener Fire Dept Urges Carbon Monoxide Alarm Compliance”

The Kitchener Fire Department is urging homeowners to invest in carbon monoxide alarms promptly, following the enforcement of a new Ontario regulation mandating their installation on every floor of a home or existing multi-unit residence. Effective at the beginning of 2026, adjustments to the Ontario Fire Code stipulate that a functional carbon monoxide alarm must be present on each level of a dwelling with a gas-burning appliance such as a furnace, water heater, or stove.

As consumers browse through retail stores to purchase these alarms, they may notice various brand options available, prompting the question of which one to select. Franz Tschoegl, a public information officer with the Kitchener Fire Department, elucidated on the three styles of alarms to choose from during a shopping trip at a local Home Hardware store. Tschoegl mentioned that individuals have the option of battery-operated, plug-in, or hardwired alarms.

For those already equipped with a hardwired system, Tschoegl recommended opting for combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms when updating existing smoke alarms. It is advisable to ensure that the chosen alarm meets the necessary certification standards, with Tschoegl emphasizing the importance of looking for the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) logo on the package as an indication of compliance.

Tschoegl further advised homeowners to regularly test both the carbon monoxide detector and smoke alarms monthly after installation. Fire departments refrain from endorsing specific brands but emphasize the significance of selecting certified products. By adhering to these guidelines, individuals can ensure the safety and compliance of their residential carbon monoxide alarm systems.
