Lab-grown diamonds, a rising trend among engaged couples, are gaining popularity as a more affordable alternative to mined diamonds, shifting the traditional dominance of natural diamonds in the market. Toronto residents Daniel Ng and Olivia Chan opted for a lab-grown diamond during their ring-shopping in 2024 due to the considerable cost savings compared to natural diamonds.
Industry experts note that lab-grown diamonds can be up to 90% cheaper than their natural counterparts, making them an attractive choice for many consumers. The affordability and increasing availability of lab-grown diamonds have led more young couples to choose this option over mined diamonds.
However, a recent investigation by Marketplace revealed significant price disparities in the lab-grown diamond market. The study compared two identical lab-grown diamonds, one purchased from Blue Nile and the other from Alibaba. Both diamonds were one carat, D-color, ideal cut, VS1 clarity, and round shape. The Blue Nile diamond was priced at $1,639.23, while the Alibaba diamond cost only $228.86.
The varying prices for similar lab-grown diamonds have raised concerns in the industry. Diamond industry analyst Paul Zimnisky highlighted the potential credibility issues posed by such price discrepancies. He explained that some retailers may be marking up lab-grown diamonds significantly to maximize profits, despite the lower production costs associated with these stones.
The investigation also involved verifying the diamonds’ quality through assessments by accredited jewelry appraisers. Both diamonds were confirmed to be of equal quality and valued at $1,925 Canadian dollars. Appraiser Eddy Young emphasized the cost-effectiveness of lab-grown diamonds produced in manufacturing hubs like China and India.
Marketplace reached out to Blue Nile’s parent company, Signet Jewelers, for clarification on the pricing disparity between their diamond and the Alibaba diamond. Signet attributed the price difference to factors such as brand reputation and quality assurance.
Advice on shopping smarter for lab-grown diamonds includes checking reviews, using secure payment methods, and getting diamonds appraised for authenticity. Industry experts anticipate a further decline in prices for lab-grown diamonds, making them more accessible to consumers.
Chan and Ng, the couple who purchased the lab-grown diamond, expressed their satisfaction with their choice and emphasized the importance of informed decision-making when buying diamonds. They look forward to a future where consistent pricing and accessibility are key factors in the diamond industry.
