“Mike Myers and Hazel Mae Headline Canadian Screen Awards”

The Canadian Screen Awards are gearing up to recognize actor Mike Myers, sportscaster Hazel Mae, and others during this year’s Canadian Screen Week event. Myers, Mae, Canadian Film Centre executive director maxine bailey, and filmmaker Chandler Levack’s movie “Mile End Kicks” will be commended for their significant impact and achievements in the film and television industry.

Tammy Frick, CEO of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television (also known as the Canadian Academy), expressed that these outstanding individuals not only inspire upcoming storytellers but also showcase Canada’s exceptional talent and innovation in screen arts to the world. Canadian Screen Week will take place in Toronto from May 27 to May 31, culminating in the Canadian Screen Awards ceremony honoring the best in the country’s cinema, television, and digital media.

Toronto-born Myers, known for his breakthrough on “Saturday Night Live” and roles in Hollywood hits like “Austin Powers” and “Shrek,” will receive this year’s Academy Icon Award. The Canadian Academy bestows this honor on individuals or institutions making a remarkable, ongoing contribution to the media industry, both domestically and internationally.

Described as one of the most versatile performers of his era, the 62-year-old Primetime Emmy winner and Order of Canada officer has an impressive portfolio with over 80 film and television credits as an actor, writer, producer, and director. Myers made headlines recently for his return to “SNL,” where he parodied Canadian citizen Elon Musk amid tensions with the U.S. government. His advocacy for Canada was epitomized in a memorable “elbows up” movement moment during an “SNL” appearance.

Hazel Mae, a prominent figure in Canadian sportscasting, particularly known for her coverage of Toronto Blue Jays games, will be honored with the Gordon Sinclair Award for Broadcast Journalism by the Canadian Academy. Mae’s exceptional work captured the highs and lows of the Blue Jays’ journey, including their heart-wrenching loss in the World Series.

maxine bailey, the executive director of the Canadian Film Centre, will receive the Changemaker Award for her efforts in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in Canadian media. Bailey has been instrumental in fostering systemic change within the industry to amplify underrepresented perspectives and combat racism and discrimination.

Chandler Levack’s film “Mile End Kicks” is being recognized with the Sustainable Production Award for its exemplary environmental practices during production and its portrayal of sustainability within the storyline. The film, set in Montreal’s Mile End neighborhood, showcases the music scene and emphasizes environmental leadership through its production practices, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting local sourcing and community engagement.

The Canadian Screen Awards ceremony, hosted by actor Andrew Phung, will be broadcast on CBC and streamed on CBC Gem at 8 p.m. ET on May 31. This year’s event will also be simulcast on Bell-owned CTV and Crave, as well as Corus-owned Global and STACKTV.
