Conservative Member of Parliament Garnett Genuis has accused a student organization at York University of impeding free speech by denying him permission to host an event on campus. However, the university’s student center has refuted any political influence on their decision.
Genuis took to social media to express his disappointment after his event at the Toronto campus was canceled, attributing it to the student union’s decision. While no specific reasons were provided for the cancellation, Genuis condemned it as an infringement on free speech.
The president of the York Federation of Students clarified that her group lacked the authority to approve or cancel events, mentioning that she was unaware of Genuis’s event until approached by the media. Genuis later clarified that it was the York University Student Centre that rejected his event, citing the format as the reason.
Genuis has been engaging with students at various university campuses to discuss topics such as youth unemployment and affordability. He emphasized the importance of gathering information for parliamentary purposes and sharing insights about the Conservative youth jobs plan.
During his campus visits, Genuis sets up tables in public areas to interact with students, addressing issues faced by young people. However, he stated that the student center at York University insisted on a closed space for conversing with students, which he deemed restrictive to open dialogue.
The executive director of the student center explained that the event was not approved due to insufficient details provided by the organizers, emphasizing that the decision was not politically motivated. He welcomed the organizers to reapply for the event in the future.
Despite the controversy, Genuis expressed interest in engaging with York University students in the future. The university reiterated its commitment to upholding free expression and facilitating respectful dialogue among individuals with diverse perspectives.
