The lifestyle of an artist varies greatly among individuals. While some enjoy the luxury of spending their nights and early mornings engrossed in creative endeavors, others face challenges balancing personal and professional responsibilities.
Artists, particularly those with caregiving duties, often encounter unseen hurdles that can impede their creative and career pursuits. Julia Carr, the artistic director of Neighbourhood Dance Works, highlighted the struggles faced by individuals juggling artistic passion with caregiving responsibilities.
According to Carr, the lack of a fixed schedule and the demands of caregiving can lead to exhaustion and burnout among artists. Those working on contracts without traditional employment benefits may find it challenging to access support services like childcare or eldercare.

To alleviate some of the stress associated with artistic work and caregiving responsibilities, Neighbourhood Dance Works has released an Artists Care Toolkit. This toolkit provides a comprehensive list of resources, including contact information for community organizations, childcare facilities, and healthcare support services.
As a professional dancer and a mother, Carr recognized the challenges faced by freelance artists, especially during the early years of motherhood. She emphasized the importance of acknowledging the struggles faced by artists while pursuing their passion.

The Artist Care Toolkit is part of the Balancing Act’s Level UP! initiative, which aims to enhance work-life balance for artists, parents, and caregivers. Carr emphasized that the toolkit is a starting point to provide essential resources and support for those in need.
The toolkit, designed to evolve with community feedback, offers tools to help artists articulate their needs, navigate support options, and foster a culture of mutual care and respect.
Carr encourages artists facing similar challenges to explore available options and not hesitate to seek support. She believes that understanding one’s needs and communicating them is crucial in fostering a supportive environment for artists and caregivers.
