Kristýna Kaltounkova netted two goals, while Kayle Osborne made 31 saves to secure a shutout as the New York Sirens triumphed over the Sceptres 2-0 in Toronto during a Professional Women’s Hockey League match on Tuesday. The win propelled New York’s winning streak to four games, boasting a record of 6-0-0-5.
Toronto’s Elaine Chuli stopped 20 shots but couldn’t prevent her team (4-0-3-4) from suffering their third consecutive loss. Kaltounkova redirected a point shot from Jincy Roese early in the second period to open the scoring.
Following a hectic scramble in front of Toronto’s net, Kaltounkova was awarded a penalty shot due to a hand on puck violation by Ella Shelton. Despite hitting the post with her shot, Kaltounkova sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the final seconds of the game.
The Sirens capitalized on their chances, clinching a hard-fought win, propelling them to second place in the PWHL standings, just one point behind the Boston Fleet. Toronto struggled to convert scoring opportunities, with their late push falling short against Osborne’s solid performance.
In a significant moment, Kaltounkova’s tip-in goal provided the Sirens with the necessary cushion to secure the win. Notably, Daryl Watts entered the game with an impressive point streak, nearing a league record set by Sarah Fillier last season.
Looking ahead, the Sirens will face off against the Minnesota Frost on January 16, while the Sceptres are set to visit the Boston Fleet on January 14.
