“North of North” Leads Canadian Screen Award Nominations

The latest Canadian Screen Award nominations have been unveiled, featuring standout contenders like the groundbreaking comedy series set in Nunavut, a sci-fi thriller reminiscent of “Sinners,” and a time-travel mockumentary inspired by “Back to the Future.” Also making waves is the popular queer hockey drama. Leading the pack with 20 nominations is the CBC, Netflix, and APTN collaboration, “North of North,” starring Anna Lambe. This sitcom follows a young Inuk mother navigating a public split from her spouse.

“Not of North” has received accolades across various categories, including best comedy series, best lead performer in a comedy (Anna Lambe), and best supporting performances in a comedy from Braeden Clarke and Maika Harper. This impressive recognition places the show in an elite league alongside past nominees like “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” and “Schitt’s Creek.”

In the film category, “40 Acres,” “Blue Heron,” and “The Cost of Heaven” are among the contenders for Best Motion Picture. The competition for Achievement in Direction for Film includes notable names like R.T. Thorne and Sophy Romvari. Not far behind in nominations is the widely acclaimed “Heated Rivalry,” which has garnered 18 nods, including best drama series and best lead performer recognition for François Arnaud and Hudson Williams.

This year, a significant rule change dictates that only Canadian citizens and permanent residents are eligible for nominations, excluding non-Canadian actors. The film industry sees strong contenders like “40 Acres” and “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie,” which have received considerable acclaim and multiple nominations.

As the Canadian entertainment industry faces challenges, the Canadian Screen Awards serve as a platform to celebrate outstanding talent and achievements. The event, hosted by Andrew Phung and simulcast on various platforms, promises an exciting showcase of Canadian creativity and storytelling prowess.
