“P.E.I. Libraries See Surge in Demand and Digital Borrowing”

Demand for library services in Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) remained robust in 2025, with Islanders borrowing 735,151 items over the past year, marking a seven per cent increase from the previous year. “The Grey Wolf” by Louise Penny emerged as the most borrowed title during the period. Grace Dawson, the director of P.E.I.’s libraries, attributed the growing demand to the financial challenges faced by many residents, prompting them to turn to free resources like libraries for access to books, Wi-Fi, and other services.

In addition to traditional in-library services, the Community Care Facility Delivery Service distributed 4,359 items to care facilities and nursing homes, while 5,843 items were delivered to early learning and child care centers across the province. The surge in digital borrowing was also notable, with libraries witnessing a rise in the use of e-books and audiobooks. Dawson highlighted the increased costs associated with providing digital content and the need to continually purchase titles due to restrictions on checkouts and circulation limits.

P.E.I. Public Library Services plans to prioritize online resources in response to the heightened demand for digital content. Furthermore, the library service expanded its programming offerings in 2025, with over 5,000 programs conducted across 25 libraries, attracting over 50,000 participants. The diverse programs cater to various age groups and interests, including story times, technology sessions, and craft clubs.

The libraries also introduced non-traditional items like ghost-hunting kits, LaunchPads loaded with educational games, Heart Health kits, and cognitive care kits tailored for individuals with early-stage dementia and Alzheimer’s. These innovative additions have garnered positive feedback from library users. Additionally, the libraries collaborate with community organizations to provide services like tax return assistance at library branches.

Overall, the P.E.I. Public Library Service continues to evolve and adapt to meet the changing needs of its patrons, offering a wide range of resources and programs to enrich the community.
