Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud experienced a thrilling moment at the Canadian figure skating championships when they unexpectedly clinched their first national title. While standing in the mixed zone, the pair saw a sudden shift in scores on a nearby TV screen, realizing they had secured the victory that had eluded them in the past.
Their “Gladiator” routine, reintroduced from the previous season, earned Pereira and Michaud 135.03 points in the free program, surpassing their rivals Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps by 12.02 points. This remarkable comeback after a nine-point deficit from the short program secured them the gold medal with a total score of 204.14. Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps settled for silver, while Kelly Ann Laurin and Loucas Éthier claimed the bronze.
Overwhelmed with emotions, Pereira and Michaud celebrated their hard-earned victory, emphasizing their dedication, determination, and love for the sport. Michaud expressed, “This is what we live for,” while Pereira added, “This is unbelievable. It shows our grit, our determination, and our passion for the sport.”
Their journey to success began in August 2022 when Michaud, seeking a new partner after his former teammate retired, joined forces with Pereira, a former singles skater. Despite initial doubts, Michaud had foreseen their triumph, confidently predicting their future as national champions. Pereira fondly recalled their early training days and how Michaud’s bold predictions eventually came true.
Moving forward, Pereira and Michaud, along with Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps, are set to represent Canada in the upcoming Milan Cortina Olympics. Despite challenges faced by the veteran pair, including Stellato-Dudek’s illness, they remain determined to excel at the Winter Games and continue pursuing their Olympic dreams.
