“Qatar’s Major Investment Boosts Canadian Infrastructure”

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Qatar has pledged substantial investments in Canada’s major infrastructure projects. These investments are expected to expedite project completion, boost the energy sector, and generate employment opportunities for Canadians. Carney made this announcement during a press briefing in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

Describing this as a pivotal moment in the two countries’ relationship, Carney emphasized that they will enhance cultural ties between the people, including expanding direct flights from Canada to Qatar to promote tourism and business. He highlighted the importance of mutual cultural understanding in fostering trust and collaboration.

After prolonged negotiations, Canada aims to finalize the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement with Qatar by the summer. Additionally, Canada plans to station a defense attaché in Doha to strengthen defense partnerships between the two nations.

Earlier in the day, Carney was warmly received at a ceremony and held discussions with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Carney extended an invitation to the Emir to visit Canada later this year, further solidifying bilateral relations.

The Prime Minister’s Office stated that both leaders discussed enhancing ties between Canada and Qatar and agreed to maintain communication, with Carney inviting the sheikh to visit Canada in the upcoming year.

Carney’s visit aims to bolster trade relations and collaborations in artificial intelligence, infrastructure, energy, and defense with Qatar. This visit follows meetings with key political and business figures in Beijing earlier in the week to strengthen trade and bilateral connections with China.

This trip is part of the Liberal government’s broader strategy to attract new investments and expand trade relationships beyond traditional allies like the United States. Carney is scheduled to conclude his nine-day international tour by participating in the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
