“Rare Northern Lights Show Expected After Solar Flare”

On Monday night, stargazers may have the opportunity to witness a captivating display of the northern lights if the skies are clear. The U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) reported a significant event where the sun emitted an X 1.9 flare, followed by a coronal mass ejection (CME), with X flares being the most potent on the solar flare scale.

This particular flare stood out as it persisted for several hours, making it more potent than a typical flare of similar magnitude. CMEs are powerful bursts of solar particles that travel swiftly on the solar wind. Geomagnetic storms, which disrupt Earth’s magnetosphere, are categorized from G1 (minor) to G5 (extreme) on a scale. The SWPC anticipates a severe G4 storm, which can have a significant impact. Notably, previous G5 storms in May 2024 and October 2024 produced breathtaking light displays, even visible in the Caribbean.

While the aurora borealis is commonly observed in northern regions, favorable conditions such as Earth intersecting a fast-moving CME particle stream can extend visibility farther south. The positioning of the auroral hole, which guides CME particles, plays a crucial role in determining visibility range.
