“Reading with the Raiders: Hockey Stars Inspire Young Readers”

The usual quiet atmosphere at a Prince Albert public library branch transforms as children giggle and line up for autographs while Prince Albert Raiders players settle in for a reading session. This event is part of Reading with the Raiders, a well-established literacy initiative where players from the Western Hockey League team engage in reading activities with kids. Families are encouraged to drop by, take a seat, and enjoy as the players read books to the children, offering young fans a unique opportunity to interact with their idols off the ice.

Riley Penner, a parent, mentioned that attending these sessions has become a regular family outing for them, emphasizing the benefits of such programs for kids who may not have the chance to play hockey. Raiders forward Ben Harvey highlighted that these library visits aim to demonstrate to children that the team’s support extends beyond game nights, fostering relationships and interests outside of hockey.

Center Riley Boychuk expressed his hope that this initiative instills pride and excitement in the kids. The program, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Prince Albert, has been running for over 25 years. Rotary member Brian Bosomworth noted the strong sense of connection and community spirit that these events cultivate, emphasizing the value of the time and attention given to the children.

In addition to the reading sessions, a season-long reading challenge is integrated into the program, allowing children to track their reading progress with the opportunity to win prizes at the end of the season. Each event attracts a mix of familiar faces and new families, expanding the program’s reach throughout the Raiders’ season. For the kids, receiving signed merchandise and tickets is a thrilling experience that not only brings them closer to their favorite players but also underscores the importance of reading alongside their love for hockey.
