School Buses Suspended in Guelph and Wellington County

All school transportation services in Guelph and surrounding Wellington County have been suspended on Tuesday due to freezing rain. Wellington-Dufferin Student Transportation Services called off transportation for students in all four zones they cover, including Guelph, Puslinch, Rockwood, Erin, North Wellington, and Dufferin County, while schools remain open.

In a similar move, Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region canceled buses to E.C. Drury due to the yellow warning for freezing rain affecting Waterloo Region and Guelph. The freezing rain is expected to taper off in the early evening, with an ice accumulation of one to five millimeters anticipated by the day’s end.

According to Environment Canada, the precipitation is likely to start as patchy freezing drizzle in the morning before transitioning to freezing rain. Subsequently, the freezing rain is forecasted to change to snow later as a low-pressure system sweeps through southern Ontario. The agency warned of potentially icy and slippery roads and walkways, urging caution for pedestrians and drivers due to the risk of falls and slips.

Authorities in Waterloo Region are advising motorists to exercise caution as freezing rain can lead to dangerous road conditions. Waterloo Regional Police Service emphasized the need to reduce driving speed, maintain safe distances between vehicles, and clear all ice from vehicles.

Sgt. Ed Sanchuk of West Region Ontario Provincial Police also shared a video message on Tuesday morning, highlighting the hazardous weather conditions and advising drivers to adjust their speed and driving behavior accordingly. The Grand River Conservation Authority issued a reminder for the public to avoid ice on local water bodies due to unstable conditions caused by fluctuating temperatures.
