Seattle’s Lexie Adzija netted the first short-handed goal of the season in the third period, propelling the Torrent to a 6-4 victory over the Toronto Sceptres in a thrilling match on Tuesday night. The win ended Seattle’s three-game losing streak.
The Torrent, an expansion team, set a new single-game franchise record with six goals, tying the highest-scoring game in the Professional Women’s Hockey League this season. The combined total of 10 goals marked the highest scoring game in the PWHL this season, surpassing the previous record set by Minnesota and Seattle with eight goals in a match on Jan. 11.
Seattle’s Jessie Eldridge contributed a goal and two assists, while Hannah Bilka added a goal and an assist to secure the victory for the Torrent (4-1-2-5). Hilary Knight, Julia Gosling, and Megan Carter, who previously played for Toronto, also found the back of the net for Seattle. Carter’s goal, her first in the PWHL and the first by a Seattle defender this season, extended the lead to 5-3 with 14:34 remaining in the game. Corinne Schroeder made 31 saves in goal for Seattle.
On the other side, Blayre Turnbull, Jesse Compher, Kali Flanagan, and Natalie Spooner scored for Toronto (4-1-3-6). Turnbull opened the scoring just 78 seconds into the game, with Compher quickly adding another goal to put Toronto ahead 2-0 early on. Flanagan scored her first goal of the season in the second period to level the score at 3-3.
Looking ahead, the Sceptres will face the Vancouver Goldeneyes, while the Torrent will take on the same opponent at Ball Arena in Denver as part of the PWHL’s Takeover Tour on Sunday.
