Actor Shia LaBeouf received probation after admitting to assaulting three individuals outside a New Orleans bar during Mardi Gras. LaBeouf is obligated to participate in an alcohol treatment program as part of the sentence issued by an Orleans Parish judge, as confirmed by Sarah Chervinsky, the actor’s legal representative. LaBeouf, renowned for his lead roles in “Transformers” (2007) and “Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull” (2008), had been granted bail subsequent to his arrest near the French Quarter.
Footage from the incident on February 17 shows LaBeouf, shirtless, pushing one person to the ground outside a bar and striking another individual in the face, potentially causing a dislocated nose, according to a New Orleans police report. Authorities reported that LaBeouf used homophobic slurs repeatedly, even during his arrest. LaBeouf pleaded guilty to three counts of simple battery.
Orleans Parish Judge Juana Marine-Lombard imposed a six-month suspended sentence and two years of probation on the actor. Additionally, LaBeouf is required to maintain distance from the victims and the bar. Chervinsky stated that LaBeouf aimed to take responsibility for his actions, labeling the incident as a “minor Mardi Gras bar scuffle” devoid of bias or prejudice.
Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams mentioned in a statement that his office consulted with the victims to secure their approval before offering LaBeouf the plea agreement. One of the assaulted individuals, Jeffrey Damnit (also known as Jeffrey Klein), asserted that LaBeouf had shoved him from behind at the bar earlier that night, while hurling homophobic insults and death threats.
Damnit’s attorney expressed hope that LaBeouf’s behavior would improve following substance abuse treatment, emphasizing equality and safety for all individuals in New Orleans. LaBeouf’s history includes multiple legal entanglements, such as a 2017 arrest in New York City on assault suspicions during a livestream and a subsequent arrest for public drunkenness, disorderly conduct, and obstruction in Georgia while filming “The Peanut Butter Falcon.”
In another instance in 2020, LaBeouf faced charges of misdemeanor battery and petty theft in Los Angeles. This legal turmoil coincided with a lawsuit filed by singer and actor FKA Twigs (Tahliah Barnett), accusing LaBeouf of physical and emotional abuse during their relationship, which was settled in July. LaBeouf initially gained fame as a child actor on the Disney Channel series “Even Stevens.”
