The City of St. Catharines commenced its sesquicentennial festivities by holding a flag-raising ceremony and unveiling plans for upcoming events. Introducing a logo for its 150th anniversary, the city highlighted the diverse communities integral to its history long before official city status was granted on May 1, 1876.
The newly revealed logo, symbolizing unity and heritage, reflects a patchwork of land parcels reminiscent of quilts, with each blue square representing the city’s varied communities, neighborhoods, and industries intertwined to signify the city’s age. Mayor Mat Siscoe emphasized that the city’s history is woven into this patchwork, shaping St. Catharines into what it is today.
To honor its rich history, St. Catharines will showcase different voices recounting significant moments through a year-long series of social media posts. Additionally, the city plans various commemorative activities, including a community gathering at Montebello Park on May 2, the appointment of a Poet Laureate focusing on poetry and cultural events, a tree planting project with local environmental groups, and 150 initiatives to engage with the city’s communities.
The city’s 150th-anniversary celebrations will culminate on July 1, coinciding with Canada Day, featuring a drone show and fireworks at Port Dalhousie’s Rennie Park, marking a festive conclusion to the national holiday.
