Operations at the Cigar Lake uranium mine in northern Saskatchewan have been halted temporarily due to processing issues at Orano’s McClean Lake uranium processing mill, as announced by Canadian uranium supplier Cameco Corp. The mine is home to the world’s richest uranium deposit and employs over 400 workers and contractors.
Descending into the underground world of the mine involves squeezing into a metal cage and dropping to depths greater than the Empire State Building’s height. Workers, like radiation technician Cessa Fern, face challenges such as taking air samples in the mine’s darker and noisier sections. Despite initial reservations, Fern overcame her fears and embraced the tasks at hand.
The mining process involves using a jet boring system to extract uranium from the ore, which is then pumped into a holding area after being cut into pieces. Safety measures, including radiation monitoring and emergency protocols, are in place to protect workers from potential hazards.
Taryn Roske, the first female operator of the jet boring system, navigates the underground environment for 13-hour shifts daily. While the work is demanding, employees enjoy extended time off after two-week stints on-site, with amenities like meals, a gym, and recreational activities provided at the camp.
For the Fern family, mining is a tradition, with multiple generations involved in various roles at the mine. The extracted uranium concentrate, known as “yellowcake,” is processed at a nearby mill before being shipped to buyers worldwide for nuclear power generation.
Cameco’s commitment to collaboration with Indigenous communities and environmental stewardship is evident in its operations. Water used in mining is treated and tested before being returned to Waterbury Lake, while waste materials are securely stored to ensure minimal environmental impact.
The Cigar Lake mine, with its high-grade uranium production, plays a significant role in Canada’s uranium industry, powering electricity grids and supporting local employment.
