The Toronto International Film Festival has unveiled five special presentations for its 51st edition, following the earlier announcements of the opening-night film and gala presentations. Among the highlights are the international premiere of the star-studded sci-fi comedy “Alpha Gang,” the Argentinian revenge thriller “Glaxo,” the romance film “Love of Your Life” starring Margaret Qualley, the Nazi hunting drama “The Housewife,” and the action-packed “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” featuring Mahershala Ali.
Directed by David and Nathan Zellner, “Alpha Gang” portrays a group of aliens disguised as a 1950s biker gang on a mission to conquer Earth, only to face unexpected challenges when emotions come into play. Originally scheduled for release in 2024 with a different cast, the film now stars Chris Pine, Lily-Rose Depp, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Cate Blanchett, Dave Bautista, Riley Keough, and Léa Seydoux.
Adapted from a novel by Argentinian author Hernán Ronsino, “Glaxo” explores the impact of a policeman and his wife on the lives of four friends in a small town. Director Benjamin Naishtat, known for his work on “Rojo,” delves into the social and political dynamics of Argentina in the 1950s-1980s through this film.
“Love of Your Life,” led by Margaret Qualley and Patrick Schwarzenegger, delves into themes of loss and romance as a widow reconnects with a past love. Produced by Ryan Gosling and directed by Rachel Morrison, the film promises emotional depth and features Gabriel Basso in the cast.
“The Housewife,” a psychological drama by Canadian director Ben Shirinian, is based on a true story of a journalist investigating a suspected Nazi officer in 1964 Queens. Starring Naomi Watts, Tye Sheridan, Michael Imperioli, and Norman Reedus, the film delves into the complexities of relationships and wartime history.
Mahershala Ali stars in “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” as a religious hitman navigating personal and moral challenges in a high-octane thriller reminiscent of “John Wick.” Directed by Bassam Tariq, the film boasts a talented ensemble cast and is set for theatrical release soon.
The Toronto International Film Festival is scheduled to take place from September 10 to 20, with the full lineup of films to be revealed on August 11. Ticket sales will commence on August 21 for TIFF members and August 31 for the general public.
