Nunavimmiut residents in Puvirnituq are facing a tragic incident involving a suspected murder-suicide, as reported by the local police. The Nunavik Police Service (NPS) revealed that a 54-year-old woman and her 57-year-old husband were discovered deceased inside their residence on January 5.
According to Patrice Abel, the NPS’s head of investigations, the couple’s children found their parents after becoming concerned about not hearing from them for several days. Upon arrival, they found their mother deceased and their father holding a rifle. The son managed to disarm his father before seeking help from neighbors, who then contacted the police.
Upon police arrival, the husband was also found dead with a different firearm nearby. The identities of the family members have not been disclosed by the authorities. The community of Puvirnituq, led by Mayor Lucy Qalingo, is deeply affected by the tragic events.
Qalingo expressed the community’s unity in the face of adversity and emphasized the importance of supporting one another during this challenging time. Efforts are underway to provide additional assistance to the family, with plans for elders from neighboring communities to offer healing support in Puvirnituq.
Encouraging a focus on well-being and healing, Qalingo highlighted the need to address intergenerational trauma and strive for healthier lifestyles within the community. With the incident being investigated as a homicide, the Sûreté du Québec, the provincial police service, has taken over the case.
