The White House announced on Tuesday that President Donald Trump is exploring various avenues to secure Greenland, potentially involving the U.S. military, as he revives his quest to dominate the strategic island despite opposition from Europe. Trump views obtaining Greenland as vital for U.S. national security to counter adversaries in the Arctic region, the White House stated. Discussions with his team are ongoing to pursue this foreign policy goal, with the option of utilizing the U.S. military under consideration.
Greenland has consistently expressed its refusal to become a part of the United States. Tillie Martinussen, a former Greenland legislator, voiced the widespread discontent among residents over Trump’s persistent talks about seizing control. Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has conveyed his disapproval of Washington’s pressure while emphasizing the importance of maintaining good relations with the U.S.
Despite pushback from major European nations and Canada in support of Greenland’s sovereignty, Trump remains undeterred in his pursuit. The possibility of incorporating Canada as the 51st U.S. state has also been a topic of discussion, although Canadian authorities have dismissed the idea. Trump’s renewed interest in Greenland, initially expressed in 2019, has resurfaced following recent events, including the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
A senior U.S. official, speaking anonymously, disclosed that Trump and his advisers are exploring different strategies to secure Greenland. Options range from a direct purchase of Greenland to establishing a Compact of Free Association (COFA) with the territory, similar to agreements the U.S. has with other nations for financial support and defense cooperation. Diplomacy is highlighted as the preferred approach, with dealmaking favored by the President.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that recent threats regarding Greenland do not indicate an imminent invasion but rather an intention to negotiate a purchase from Denmark. Congressional members, including both Democrats and Republicans, have urged respect for Denmark’s sovereignty and treaty obligations. Trump’s ambition to secure Greenland, driven by its mineral resources and strategic importance, remains a focal point for his administration despite challenges and opposition.
