“TV Show Boosts Tourism at Alberta’s UNESCO Buffalo Jump”

A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Alberta has experienced a surge in interest following a mention on a popular American television show, and the site’s marketing director anticipates a busy summer season as a result. The Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump was highlighted in a recent episode of the award-winning TV medical drama “The Pitt.” The character Dr. Michael (Robby) Robinavitch, portrayed by Noah Wyle, announces his plans to visit the landmark located in the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Situated approximately 150 kilometers south of Calgary, the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump was historically utilized by Indigenous communities to guide bison herds towards a cliff edge for hunting purposes. The site features an interpretive center integrated into the sandstone cliff, offering insights into Blackfoot culture, local ecology, and archaeological discoveries, culminating in a cliff-top trail for visitors.

Quinton Crow Shoe, the head of marketing at the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, has observed an increased interest from visitors who were inspired by the TV show mention. Crow Shoe acknowledged the show’s impact on social media and email engagement, expressing gratitude for the heightened awareness and interest generated by the mention.

Designated as a World Heritage Site in 1981, the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump typically attracts around 60,000 visitors annually. Crow Shoe remains optimistic about sustaining the current buzz and hopes that the recent uptick in interest will translate into higher visitor numbers and tour bookings during the peak season from May to September. Additionally, promotional efforts, including discounts offered through the national Canada Strong Pass, have contributed positively to visitor numbers.

Crow Shoe emphasized the interconnectedness of attractions in southern Alberta, ranging from Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park to Waterton Lakes National Park, encouraging visitors to explore the diverse offerings in the region. Provincial marketing agency Travel Alberta capitalized on the show’s mention by releasing a promotional video featuring the TV characters against the backdrop of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump’s cliffs.

Alberta Culture Minister Tanya Fir further amplified the exposure by sharing the TV clip on social media, highlighting the significance of Alberta’s historical and cultural landmarks resonating with global audiences. The collaborative efforts aim to elevate awareness and appreciation for Alberta’s rich heritage and natural wonders.
