Severe thunderstorms swept through western Manitoba on Sunday, impacting an area still recovering from previous storms earlier in the month. The storms spawned at least one tornado, described by storm chaser Aaron Jayjack as a significant event. Jayjack, an experienced tornado chaser, expressed relief that no fatalities occurred despite the destructive nature of the tornado.
Environment and Climate Change Canada verified a tornado touchdown southwest of Rossburn, located approximately 275 kilometers west of Winnipeg, around 8 p.m. The agency is collaborating with the Northern Tornadoes Project to investigate another possible tornado near Roblin reported around 8:55 p.m.
Jayjack recounted tracking supercells during the afternoon that eventually developed into a violent tornado within a short period. He witnessed the tornado forming near Birtle, southwest of Rossburn, escalating rapidly into a large and destructive vortex.
Following the tornado’s impact on a farmhouse, Jayjack paused his chase to assist the occupants and assess the damage. Fortunately, the individuals inside the damaged home were unharmed, despite the significant destruction caused by the tornado.
Barb McIvor, who captured images of the tornado, described it as both awe-inspiring and concerning, emphasizing her sympathy for the affected family. The Rossburn Fire Department Chief, Kelly Slon, highlighted the extensive damage caused by the tornado, including the destruction of a century-old brick house and surrounding structures.
Local officials, including Rossburn Municipality Mayor Shirley Kalyniuk and Deputy Mayor Adam Grabowski, expressed shock at the scale of the tornado’s devastation. Efforts are underway to assess the damage and provide support to the affected residents.
The tornado’s impact left a trail of destruction, prompting Environment Canada to send a team to investigate and assign a damage rating. The agency is also monitoring the weather for potential further severe conditions in the region.
