“West Vancouver Businessman Yuri Fulmer Eyes B.C. Conservative Party Leadership”

Yuri Fulmer, a businessman hailing from West Vancouver, humorously recalls his humble beginnings in the business world, emphasizing that he’s not your typical corporate figure. Starting out at an A&W restaurant in a polyester uniform, making a plethora of teen burgers alongside eight colleagues, Fulmer’s journey led him to own numerous A&W franchises in Western Canada and various other ventures.

Recently, Fulmer declared his interest in running for the leadership of the B.C. Conservative Party, highlighting his personal narrative and commitment to affordability as central themes of his campaign. Reflecting on his ability to achieve homeownership, car ownership, and start a family, Fulmer expressed concerns about the current challenges facing British Columbians in attaining these milestones.

As the Chancellor of Capilano University and a previous candidate for the provincial Conservatives in the 2024 election, Fulmer narrowly lost to B.C. Green Jeremy Valeriote in West Vancouver-Sea to Sky. The Conservative party, which nearly secured a government position in the previous election, has faced internal turmoil with key members defecting or being dismissed, resulting in the resignation of former leader John Rustad. Discussions within the party are ongoing regarding its future direction, with a focus on balancing cultural and fiscal issues.

Fulmer’s campaign seems geared towards addressing fiscal matters, with a strong emphasis on affordability, healthcare, public safety, and the economy, aligning with the concerns voiced by British Columbians. He also highlighted the significance of property rights, particularly concerning the Cowichan Tribes decision.

Several other potential candidates are contemplating entering the race, including MLAs Peter Milobar and Harman Bhangu, former Conservative MPs Kerry-Lynne Findlay and Iain Black, Chris Gardner from the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association (ICBA), and political commentator Caroline Elliott. The party has established a leadership committee to establish the leadership selection process, with the goal of electing a new leader by summer.
