A flight attendant and another passenger confronted her regarding her 20-pound service dog, Maggie, who was peacefully resting at her feet, leading to a traumatic experience. Villeneuve, who has significant hearing loss, primarily relies on Maggie to alert her to potential dangers and assist with her balance issues.
During the incident on a Porter flight bound for Edmonton, Villeneuve was instructed to place Maggie under the seat in front of her, despite this being against both Porter and Canadian Transportation Agency regulations. This action can harm the service animal and impede its ability to aid its owner. Despite Villeneuve’s attempts to show the flight attendant the airline’s policies, the crew member insisted on the dog being stowed away.
The situation escalated as an irate passenger in the row ahead berated Villeneuve and the flight crew, demanding the dog be hidden under the seat. Villeneuve, feeling humiliated and misunderstood, was ultimately escorted off the plane by the crew, causing further embarrassment. Subsequently, the pilot made the decision to return to the gate, where Villeneuve was given the option to reboard the flight or take a later one, which she declined due to safety concerns.
Porter Airlines has acknowledged the mishap and expressed plans to enhance training related to service animals on flights and improve interactions with passengers with disabilities. The airline’s president personally reached out to Villeneuve, offering a refund for the flight, compensation for incurred expenses, and a donation to an organization of her choice.
