Chicago Cubs Acquire Edward Cabrera From Miami Marlins

The Chicago Cubs made a significant move in their off-season activities by adding Edward Cabrera to their pitching rotation. They acquired the talented right-hander from the Miami Marlins. In exchange for Cabrera, the Cubs traded outfielder Owen Caissie and infield prospects Cristian Hernandez and Edgardo De Leon to Miami.

Cabrera, who had an impressive 2025 season with an 8-7 record and a 3.53 ERA in 26 starts and 137 2/3 innings, brings valuable experience to the Cubs. On the other hand, Caissie, a 23-year-old outfielder, showcased his potential by debuting in the major leagues with the Cubs last August. Despite a .192 batting average in 12 games, Caissie had an outstanding performance in AAA Iowa, hitting .286 with 22 home runs and 55 RBIs.

Cabrera, at 28 years old, is under salary arbitration and is not eligible for free agency until after the 2028 season. The Cubs, who finished second in the National League Central with a 92-70 record last year, are looking to strengthen their pitching staff with Cabrera joining a solid rotation that includes Matthew Boyd, Shota Imanaga, Cade Horton, and Jameson Taillon.

Although Cabrera comes with some injury concerns, including recurring blisters and a right elbow sprain, his talent and potential make him a valuable addition to the Cubs. Meanwhile, Caissie was expected to compete for playing time in right field, as the Cubs anticipate the departure of Kyle Tucker in free agency.

Miami, under manager Clayton McCullough, showed improvement in their performance last season with a 79-83 record. Sandy Alcantara and Eury Perez are key figures in Miami’s pitching rotation. Hernandez and De Leon, the prospects traded to Miami, have shown promise in their respective performances in the minor leagues. Hernandez batted .252 with seven home runs and 53 RBIs for High A South Bend, while De Leon hit .276 with five home runs and 15 RBIs in the Arizona Complex League in 2025.
