“MacKenzie Scott’s $45M Donation Revives The Trevor Project”

An unforeseen donation has brought renewed hope to a charitable organization in the United States during challenging times.

The Trevor Project, a non-profit supporting 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, experienced a surge in calls to its crisis hotlines under the current administration led by Donald Trump. Simultaneously, the organization faced funding cuts that limited its ability to address these calls effectively.

However, a game-changing moment arrived when the philanthropic organization of author MacKenzie Scott extended a generous offer. Scott, a prominent billionaire philanthropist, donated $45 million US ($62.2 million Cdn) to The Trevor Project, a donation nearly matching the non-profit’s annual budget of $47 million and significantly surpassing the $25 million federal funding loss under Trump.

Janson Wu, the senior vice-president of philanthropy at The Trevor Project, expressed astonishment at the donation. This no-strings-attached contribution arrives at a critical juncture for the organization, especially after the White House halted funding for the 988 National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline’s “Press 3” option, which the Trevor Project supported.

Despite ongoing challenges, the unexpected gift will enable The Trevor Project to reinforce its crisis services, ensuring they have the capacity to assist individuals reaching out for support. Wu emphasized the importance of having competent counselors available to provide aid to young people in need.

The donation from Scott’s philanthropy organization, Yield Giving, forms part of her substantial contributions to non-profits, totaling $7 billion US in 2025. Scott is recognized for her sizable and unrestricted donations to various causes, including a previous $6 million US grant to The Trevor Project in 2020.

While Scott’s donations often exceed the annual budgets of recipient organizations, research from the Center for Effective Philanthropy indicates that most beneficiaries manage these windfalls responsibly, leading to long-term benefits. Wu acknowledged the thorough vetting process by Scott’s team and affirmed The Trevor Project’s commitment to ensuring the donation’s lasting impact and sustainability.

The Trevor Project, known for its crisis intervention services, has faced financial and organizational hurdles in the past. Despite previous challenges, the organization remains dedicated to its life-saving mission and supporting the mental health of vulnerable youth, who continue to face significant struggles within the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
