Jon Klassen Wins $750K Children’s Literature Award

Jon Klassen, a children’s book author and illustrator originally from Winnipeg known for his work on “I Want My Hat Back,” has been honored with the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, valued at nearly $750,000. Conferred annually by the Swedish Arts Council, this award recognizes individuals or organizations for their contributions to children’s and young adult literature. Jurors commended Klassen’s collection of works for its nuanced, insightful, and humorous exploration of fundamental questions.

Among his notable creations are “I Want My Hat Back,” a story featuring a bear in search of his distinctive red hat, “This Is Not My Hat,” depicting a small fish sporting a bowler hat stolen from a larger fish, “We Found a Hat,” narrating the tale of two turtles desiring a cowboy hat, and the acclaimed “Cats’ Night Out,” recipient of the Governor General’s Literary Award. In 2018, Klassen was appointed to the Order of Canada in recognition of his significant impact on children’s literature.

Currently residing in Los Angeles, Klassen holds the distinction of being the first Canadian recipient of this prestigious accolade. The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, established by the Swedish government in 2002, carries a value of five million kronor, equivalent to approximately $744,000 CAD.
