Meta, the parent company of Instagram, introduced new generative AI effects to enhance user content. However, following backlash, Meta has retracted a key feature of the tool. The feature allowing AI users to tag an Instagram account for the system to generate images from that account has been disabled. Users would need to manually opt out to prevent others from using their content for photo generation.
In response to the criticism, Meta spokesperson mentioned that the feature has been removed due to feedback. The Muse Image tool, launched by Meta, offers over 30 effects for Instagram stories and WhatsApp, with plans to extend to Facebook and Messenger. Users can transform their photos with a single tap using this tool, which is the first AI image generation model from Meta Superintelligence Lab.
Despite the innovation, concerns arose as Muse Image was only available for U.S. Instagram and WhatsApp users, with Canadians accessing new features on the Meta AI website. Users with public accounts in other countries, including Canada, had Meta AI permissions automatically enabled, requiring manual opt-out.
There was uncertainty about the return of the controversial tagging feature. Users and privacy experts raised concerns about unauthorized image usage. To address this, Meta provided guidance on changing Instagram settings to control the AI image generation tool’s permissions. Users can disable permissions through their mobile devices in the “Sharing and reuse” section of the settings.
The Muse Image tool allows users to create AI-generated effects based on prompts. By mentioning an account with ‘@’ and the username, users can apply effects to anyone’s photos. While Meta promotes this for fun creative purposes, concerns remain about unauthorized image use, especially for public figures and children.
Notably, Meta collects vast user data for AI model training. The company’s extensive data collection practices have raised privacy concerns. Meta assures that Muse Image includes protections against policy-violating content, with mechanisms for reporting objectionable images.
