Doctors are advising individuals who come into contact with bats to promptly seek medical attention to avoid potential rabies transmission. In a recent publication in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, infectious disease specialists recounted the tragic case of a child who succumbed to rabies nearly two years ago.
Dr. Brian Hummel, a senior author of the case report and a pediatric infectious disease expert at McMaster Children’s Hospital in Hamilton, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about rabies infection and its risks following the incident. The 11-year-old boy encountered a bat at a cottage in northern Ontario in 2024, which led to his untimely demise.
Despite not observing any scratches or bites on the boy’s face and perceiving no abnormal behavior from the bat, his parents did not consider rabies or seek medical attention at the time of the incident. Subsequently, the child developed facial tingling, numbness, and swelling, leading to a decline in his neurological condition. Despite medical interventions, including visits to an urgent care clinic and the emergency department, the boy was eventually removed from life support and passed away surrounded by his family.
Rabies, once symptoms manifest, is incurable, as highlighted by Dr. Hummel. However, early intervention during the incubation period, which typically lasts weeks before symptoms appear, through a series of vaccines and antibodies can effectively prevent the disease. Dr. Hummel stressed that receiving preventive measures before symptom onset significantly increases the chances of survival.
The rabies virus spreads through the nerves from the entry point into the body, eventually affecting the spinal cord and brain, leading to fatality. Although human cases of rabies in Canada are exceedingly rare, primarily transmitted through bats, other carriers include skunks, raccoons, and foxes. Bats pose the highest risk due to their inconspicuous bites and potential saliva transmission through skin contact.
In cases of bat exposure, immediate medical consultation is advised, as any contact with bat saliva on the skin can facilitate virus transmission. Primary-care providers collaborate with public health authorities to assess the need for post-exposure prophylaxis, comprising a series of vaccinations and antibody injections. The vaccination process, starting with the first shot upon exposure, followed by subsequent doses, aims to stimulate the body’s immune response against the rabies virus.
While vaccine side effects are typically mild and transient, such as fever and chills, the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the risks associated with rabies infection, emphasized Dr. Hummel. Post-vaccination monitoring helps mitigate potential adverse reactions, including the rare occurrence of anaphylaxis.
Overall, raising awareness about rabies risks and promoting prompt medical intervention following bat encounters are crucial steps in preventing fatal outcomes associated with this rare but severe infection.
