A popular trail in the N.W.T. renowned for its waterfall vistas will stay shut until a comprehensive geotechnical evaluation of the region is finished, according to the territorial government. The Twin Falls Park, positioned about 75 kilometers north of the Alberta border and 50 kilometers south of Hay River, N.W.T., features a primary route stretching five kilometers along the Hay River, providing stunning views of the Alexandra and Louise Falls.
In November, the entire trail network within the park was forced to close due to soil erosion along the riverbank, including the viewing platforms at both waterfalls. The government clarified that the closure was necessitated as individuals were not adhering to closure notices, as stated by Kathy Lepine, the South Slave regional superintendent for the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment.
There is currently no set timeline for reopening the areas impacted by erosion due to the significant damage incurred. A comprehensive geotechnical assessment of the region is imperative to ascertain the necessary safety measures for reopening. The closure will persist until the trails and infrastructure are upgraded, ensuring safe public access.
While speaking with CBC, Lepine hinted that the assessment might conclude by July, potentially allowing sections of the trail to reopen by late August.
Doug Lamalice, a member of the Kátł’odeeche First Nation in Hay River, who led tours along the Twin Falls Park trail for many years, expressed concern about the deteriorating canyon walls and emphasized the trail’s cultural significance to the Dene people.
Lamalice noted the distressing sound of parts of the wall collapsing into the water over recent years, likening it to thunder. He stressed the importance of preserving the interpretive signage along the trail, which narrates the Dene’s historical usage of the area for future understanding.
A portion of undamaged trail above Alexandra Falls is temporarily closed due to elevated water levels, as mentioned in the release. Additionally, the Escarpment Creek area has been closed for wildfire remediation work. The release confirmed that facilities such as bathrooms and picnic areas at Louise Falls Campground and Alexandra Falls rest stop remain open for public use.
