Norwegian skier Atle Lie McGrath secured victory at the Wengen World Cup slalom event for the second consecutive year, enhancing his position as a top contender for the upcoming Winter Olympics. McGrath extended his lead from the first run and finished 0.47 seconds ahead of his close friend Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, who now represents Brazil, and 0.81 seconds ahead of his teammate Henrik Kristoffersen.
This win marked McGrath’s fifth career victory and 19th podium finish on the World Cup circuit. Previously, he clinched a silver medal in the slalom event at the world championships. McGrath’s recent triumph adds to his success this season, following a slalom win in Alta Badia, Italy, last month. Expressing his excitement, McGrath described the race as legendary and shared his joy in achieving victory alongside Braathen and Kristoffersen.
With two more slalom races remaining before the commencement of the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics on February 6, McGrath continues to impress. McGrath’s father, Felix, participated in the 1988 Calgary Olympics for the U.S. in slalom and giant slalom, while his Norwegian mother competed in cross-country skiing for the University of Vermont.
McGrath demonstrated caution at the start of both runs and then accelerated on the steepest section of the Männlichen course to secure his lead. Upon finishing each run, he mimicked a move famously performed by retired Swiss skier Didier Cuche. Reflecting on his performance, McGrath emphasized his willingness to take risks and highlighted the second run as one of the best in his career.
Following the race, McGrath and Pinheiro Braathen, both 25 years old and born just two days apart, shared an enthusiastic embrace. McGrath reflected on their shared skiing journey and the determination required to excel in the sport. Additionally, Kristoffersen reached a milestone by achieving his 100th career podium finish, adding to the team’s celebrations.
