A mining company based in Vancouver reported that a group of armed men abducted 10 of its workers from a project site in Concordia, located in the state of Sinaloa, Mexico. The region has been embroiled in a cartel conflict since 2024. Vizsla Silver confirmed the incident, stating that an investigation is ongoing with limited available information. The company has informed Mexican authorities and activated crisis management and security response teams.
Operations at the site have been paused following the abduction. Vizsla Silver is working on the development of the Panuco silver and gold mining project in Sinaloa. Media reports indicate that most of the abducted employees are Mexican nationals.
The attorney general’s office in Sinaloa has initiated an investigation into the kidnapping, which was reported on January 24 after a company representative made a 911 call. State and federal authorities, including the military, are collaborating on search efforts. A search warrant was executed as part of the ongoing investigation.
According to reports by Latinus, the employees were taken from a rented residence in Concordia on January 23. Global Affairs Canada acknowledged the security incident and stated that the Canadian embassy in Mexico is in contact with local officials. There is no indication that any Canadian citizens were involved in the incident.
The Security and Citizen Protection Secretariat of Mexico has not yet commented on the situation. The violence stemming from a civil war within the Sinaloa cartel has resulted in numerous casualties and disappearances in the area.
