World champion Marco Odermatt solidified his position as a top contender for the Olympic super-G title by clinching victory in the first event of the prestigious Hahnenkamm weekend. This win marks his second super-G triumph of the season, making him the only skier with multiple victories in this discipline so far.
Competing under clear skies at Kitzbuhel, Austria, Odermatt narrowly outpaced his Swiss compatriot Franjo von Allmen by a mere 0.03 seconds. Reflecting on his performance, Odermatt expressed satisfaction with his run despite some challenges he faced on the course.
The Swiss skier’s achievement extends his lead in the super-G standings, with former world champion Vincent Kriechmayr trailing behind in seventh place. Odermatt now holds a 158-point advantage over the Austrian competitor with only three races left post the Winter Olympics.
Notable performances also came from the Canadian contingent, with Cam Alexander securing an 11th place finish and Jack Crawford placing 21st. Odermatt’s triumph in Kitzbuhel brings him closer to overtaking Hermann Maier’s third-place position on the men’s World Cup all-time race winners list.
Despite some dramatic moments on the slopes, including a crash by Swiss racer Arnaud Boisset and a near-miss by Norwegian skier Adrian Smiseth Sejersted, the competition showcased the resilience and skill of the athletes. As the ski season progresses, all eyes are now set on the upcoming events, including the final World Cup race before the much-anticipated Milan Cortina Games.
