After completing her Grade 11 exams, Bella McCarville is now focusing on supporting her mother, Krista Scharf, and their team in the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. As an alternate for Northern Ontario, the 16-year-old McCarville made her debut at the Canadian women’s curling championship.
Sporting the green Northern Ontario colors, McCarville watched attentively from the bench as Scharf, Kendra Lilly, Ashley Sippala, and Sarah Potts secured a 7-4 victory over Alberta’s Kayla Skrlik. Learning from coach Rick Lang, McCarville observed the game closely with her binoculars and absorbed valuable strategies.
Scharf, who reverted to her maiden name last August, expressed pride in the team’s performance against a tough opponent. The game was closely contested, with Skrlik briefly taking the lead before Scharf’s team responded effectively.
Following her provincial championship win, Scharf proposed adding McCarville to the lineup, a decision supported wholeheartedly by the team members, coach, and school authorities at St. Patrick High School. McCarville managed to balance her academic commitments by completing exams early, receiving exceptional support due to the national significance of the competition.
In addition to her role as an alternate in the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, McCarville is actively involved in two junior teams, showcasing her dedication to the sport. Reflecting on the experience, Scharf emphasized the importance of McCarville’s competitive spirit and skills, underscoring her potential contribution to the team if needed.
The national championship atmosphere has been an eye-opening experience for McCarville, who is relishing the opportunity to participate in media events and interviews. With notable contenders like Kerri Einarson, Kaitlyn Lawes, and Christina Black in the 18-team field, the absence of five-time champion Rachel Homan has heightened the competitive stakes for all teams.
As Scharf embarks on her 13th appearance at the national playdowns, she recognizes the fierce competition and the determination of each team to claim victory in Homan’s absence. The Scotties Tournament of Hearts promises intense battles as every team vies for the coveted championship title.
