A popular horror movie called “Obsession” has achieved a remarkable milestone by surpassing $500 million at the global box office. This achievement makes it the first original film from the 2020s to reach such a significant financial milestone.
“Obsession” has outperformed Pixar’s 2023 animated hit “Elemental,” which grossed $494.6 million worldwide, establishing itself as the highest-grossing original movie of the post-pandemic era. Notably, “Obsession” was produced with a budget of only $750,000, making it the most successful film ever made for less than $1 million in the United States.
The movie, directed by 26-year-old Curry Barker, was released on May 15 and saw a consistent increase in weekly grosses during its initial three weeks in theaters, a feat not seen since “E.T.” By the end of its U.S. theatrical run on August 14, “Obsession” had earned $263.4 million domestically and $238.1 million overseas, bringing its worldwide total to $501.5 million and counting.
The success of “Obsession” has not only brought commercial recognition but also opened doors for its cast members to bigger projects. Inde Navarette, the female lead, is set to star as Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming “X-Men” film, while Michael Johnston, the male lead, is in discussions to join Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in Universal’s new movie, “The Mummy.”
The film’s triumph has also paved the way for Barker’s next project, a horror film named “Anything but Ghosts,” where he will act alongside co-writer Cooper Tomlinson. The remarkable success of “Obsession” is a testament to its appeal and the talent behind its creation.
