Blind llama finds perfect companion in talkative sheep

Laura Greaves sought a friendly, gentle ewe in Saskatchewan as a companion for her blind llama, Maple. An experienced equine veterinarian, Greaves has a history of caring for animals with special needs, making her the perfect fit for Maple’s unique challenges. Peeps, a talkative sheep from Eyebrow, was chosen as Maple’s companion due to her vocal nature, making her an ideal match for the blind llama.

Maple, initially found as a guardian llama to protect other animals from coyotes, was eventually taken in by Greaves and her friend Jacquie Poole. Despite Maple’s poor condition upon arrival, the duo was committed to providing her with the care she needed. Maple’s eye issues led to the decision to remove both eyes, a challenging surgery that was successfully completed.

Adjusting to blindness was difficult for Maple, as llamas heavily rely on sight. Greaves used sound cues to guide Maple, but the llama struggled with basic tasks like finding food and water. To alleviate Maple’s anxiety and loneliness, Greaves sought a companion and found Peeps, who quickly became Maple’s emotional support animal.

Peeps, known for her escapades and vocal nature, proved to be a perfect match for Maple. The duo’s bond continues to grow as Peeps helps Maple navigate her surroundings and find comfort in their shared space. Greaves hopes that with time, Maple and Peeps can integrate with the other animals on the farm, but for now, they are content being a supportive duo.
