“Canada’s First Public Electric Plane Flights Launched”

The Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre is now providing public scenic flights on one of Canada’s initial certified electric aircraft, the Pipistrel Velis Electro. This aircraft partnership between the flight centre and the University of Waterloo’s Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA) involves the operation of two electric planes, with one dedicated to public flights and the other for research purposes.

The electric aircraft, accommodating the pilot and a single passenger, offers an exhilarating takeoff experience compared to conventional gas engine planes, according to Trent Harris, a flight instructor at the centre. Harris highlighted the rapid acceleration and climb of the electric aircraft, drawing a parallel to the quick response of an electric car when accelerating.

Operating solely on electricity, the aircraft generates zero in-flight emissions and notably less noise than traditional fuel engine planes. The flight centre emphasized the simplicity and efficiency of the electric propulsion system with fewer moving parts compared to traditional aircraft engines, hinting at the potential for streamlined aviation technologies in the future.

Passengers embarking on a 40-minute scenic tour across the Waterloo region can anticipate a pre-flight system check before takeoff. Harris advised passengers to refrain from engaging the pilot during takeoff and landing to ensure focused flying during critical flight phases. However, he encouraged passengers to bring cameras and enjoy the exciting experience aboard the electric plane.

Electric aviation is no longer a futuristic concept, as electric planes are now a reality in Canadian skies and globally. Merhdad Pirnia, an associate professor at the University of Waterloo, expressed optimism about the integration of electric planes into various aviation segments, from pilot training to regional and eventually passenger aircraft, including hybrid-electric models.

Efforts are underway to enhance battery range for electric planes, with weight affecting the range of aircraft like the Velis Electro, currently offering a maximum flight time of 40 to 50 minutes. Additionally, Air Canada’s acquisition of 30 electric-hybrid aircraft from Sweden’s Heart Aerospace signifies progress towards electric passenger flights, with plans for these aircraft to be operational by 2028.

To support electric planes, airports must develop adequate charging infrastructure, emphasizing the need for clean energy sources to power these aircraft. The Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre has implemented charging installations compatible with electric vehicles, and ongoing research at the University of Waterloo aims to establish micro-grids utilizing renewable energy sources like wind and solar to minimize reliance on the electric grid.
