“Chicago Cubs Sign Star Third Baseman Alex Bregman to $175M Deal”

The Chicago Cubs have officially signed Alex Bregman to a lucrative five-year contract valued at $175 million US. Bregman, an accomplished third baseman, will be welcomed during a press event at Wrigley Field on Thursday. In his new role with the Cubs, Bregman will wear jersey number 3 after Nico Hoerner, who currently sports number 2.

As part of the deal, the Cubs have deferred $70 million, representing 40 percent of the total contract value. Bregman’s annual earnings will amount to $35 million, with $15 million deferred for both this year and 2029, $10 million for each of 2027 and 2028, and $20 million for 2030. The deferred payments will be made in eight installments every July 31 from 2034 to 2041, with varying amounts allocated for each year.

Included in the agreement is a full no-trade provision for Bregman, as well as accommodations such as a hotel suite during road trips. Turning 32 in March, Bregman had previously entertained offers from Chicago before ultimately signing a three-year, $120 million contract with Boston last February. Despite his brief tenure with the Red Sox, where he posted a .273 batting average along with 18 home runs and 62 RBI, Bregman decided to make the move to the Cubs.

Having spent the majority of his professional career with the Houston Astros, where he clinched World Series titles in 2017 and 2022 amid controversy over a sign-stealing scandal, Bregman’s shift to the Cubs marks a significant transition in his baseball journey. The Cubs, having finished second in the National League Central in the previous season, are anticipating Bregman’s impact on their roster, potentially reshaping their infield dynamics with his arrival.
