Madeline Schizas Secures Fourth Canadian Figure Skating Title

Madeline Schizas delivered a strong message to her challengers and then proved her point at the Canadian figure skating championships by claiming her fourth title. This win solidified her position as the sole women’s singles entry for the upcoming Milan Cortina Olympic Games. Prior to her victory, Schizas had boldly stated that no one else would represent Canada at the Olympics, and she stood by her words with a stellar performance.

Hailing from Oakville, Ontario, the 22-year-old earned a total score of 200.86 after scoring 135.94 points in her free skate routine to “Butterfly Lovers Concerto.” Despite facing tough competition from two-time Olympian Gabrielle Daleman, who took the silver with 195.35 points, Schizas showcased her determination and skill.

Daleman, on the verge of turning 28, aimed to secure her third Olympic appearance but faced challenges due to past injuries. Despite some missed jumps and under rotations in her routine, Daleman expressed pride in her performance and resilience, emphasizing the emotional journey of her comeback.

Meanwhile, Minsol Kwon from South Korea claimed the bronze medal with a score of 193.18, showcasing her talent despite limitations on international representation. Schizas’ near-perfect free program, coupled with her perseverance despite a lack of sleep due to doping testing, highlighted her commitment to success.

In ice dance, Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier clinched their fifth Canadian title with a record-breaking score of 231.05 points. The duo, set to compete at their third Olympics in Milan, acknowledged the significance of their performance at what could potentially be their final national championships.

The competition also saw Marie-Jade Lauriault and Romain Le Gac securing bronze, overtaking Alicia Fabbri and Paul Ayer for Canada’s last Olympic spot. The emotional rollercoaster of the event reflected the dedication and hard work of all participants.

In other categories, Toronto’s Stephen Gogolev claimed his first senior men’s singles title, and Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud emerged victorious over 2024 world champions Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps in pairs. Canada’s full Olympic team, comprising seven entries across various disciplines, was set to be announced by Skate Canada following the championships.

The event showcased the resilience, talent, and competitive spirit of Canada’s figure skaters as they vied for coveted spots at the upcoming Winter Olympics.
