Swiss skiing sensation Marco Odermatt demonstrated his dominance once again at the World Cup, securing a historic fifth consecutive victory at the Adelboden giant slalom event. Despite challenging weather conditions with snowfall and limited visibility, Olympic giant slalom champion Odermatt maintained his lead from the first run to clinch the win by 0.49 seconds over Lucas Pinheiro Braathen of Brazil, with Leo Anguenot of France finishing third, 0.68 seconds behind.
Pinheiro Braathen acknowledged Odermatt’s remarkable performance, describing him as the “king of the hill” and expressing his admiration for competing against him in such a prestigious race. Odermatt’s triumph in Adelboden marks his continued success in the event since 2022, surpassing the legendary Ingemar Stenmark’s four consecutive wins from 1979 to 1982.
Reflecting on his affinity for Adelboden, Odermatt expressed his deep connection to the venue, emphasizing its significance in his skiing career. The enthusiastic support from the crowd of approximately 25,000 fans further fueled Odermatt’s determination, highlighting the importance of home advantage in his performance.
The race day began with a moment of silence to honor the victims of a tragic fire in a nearby location, setting a somber tone for the competition. Odermatt’s exceptional season in the World Cup has solidified his position as a dominant force, with a substantial lead in race points over his closest rival, Pinheiro Braathen.
For Pinheiro Braathen, the Adelboden event holds personal significance, as he overcame past challenges and injuries to achieve a podium finish. The history of the Adelboden giant slalom, dating back to 1967 with iconic winners like Jean-Claude Killy, adds to the prestige of the competition held on the picturesque Chuenisbaergli course.
While Odermatt opted to skip the upcoming slalom event, Pinheiro Braathen is poised to continue his strong performance and strive for success in the competition. The Adelboden race weekend serves as a memorable chapter in the ski season, showcasing the athletes’ skill and resilience in the face of demanding conditions.
