The off-Broadway production “Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody” is set to debut on home turf in Toronto at Soulpepper Theatre from July 9 for a four-night engagement. Canadian director-producer Alan Kliffer views the timing of bringing the show to Canada as crucial given its growing momentum.
Inspired by the popular Canadian TV series “Heated Rivalry,” writer-composer Dylan MarcAurele envisioned a musical adaptation centered around the romantic relationship of characters Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov. The project rapidly gained traction, evolving from initial songwriting sessions to sold-out concert readings and eventually an off-Broadway run fueled by the enthusiastic fan base.
Kliffer expressed amazement at the swift success of the off-Broadway show, which commenced on May 26 and has now been extended beyond its original eight-week schedule. The decision to host the Canadian debut at Soulpepper Theatre in Toronto was a natural choice for Kliffer, who praised the venue and its artistic director, Paolo Santalucia.
Santalucia echoed this sentiment, affirming that “Heated Rivalry” aligns seamlessly with Soulpepper’s ethos of showcasing Canadian talent that is bold, humorous, and thought-provoking. The upcoming Toronto performances, scheduled from July 9 to July 12, will take the form of staged concert readings, promising an engaging experience despite logistical constraints.
Following the Toronto run, the production will travel to Montreal’s Just for Laughs comedy festival before venturing to the UK for a future staging. Kliffer hinted at broader aspirations for the show, expressing a desire to eventually mount a full-scale production in Canada. The opportunity for the original series’ cast and crew to witness the musical adaptation firsthand adds another layer of significance to the Toronto showcase.
