In a unique turn of events, Blumstein found inspiration from the Apple TV comedy series “Margo’s Got Money Troubles” and decided to explore unconventional means to support his research.
Prompted by the idea of leveraging their collection of amusing videos featuring the marmots, Blumstein proposed creating an OnlyFans account named “OnlyMarms” to solicit tips from the public. While OnlyFans is commonly associated with explicit content, Blumstein clarified that OnlyMarms is a family-friendly initiative, dedicated to sharing entertaining images of marmots without any sexual connotations.
Since June, the OnlyMarms account has been regularly updated with humorous marmot photos and profiles, engaging the audience in activities like the upcoming “Fat Marmot Week,” where people can participate in a bracket-style tournament akin to Alaska’s famous “Fat Bear Week.” The event, scheduled to kick off on August 24, may even involve collaboration with Vancouver Island Marmots.
Blumstein’s research at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory focuses on yellow-bellied marmots and their responses to climate change over the past six decades. This extensive study provides valuable insights into aging and epigenetics, shedding light on how environmental factors influence gene functioning in hibernating species.
Embracing a body-positive approach, Blumstein emphasized the importance of understanding how marmots can gain significant weight to survive hibernation without adverse health effects. Despite facing funding setbacks, he has managed to sustain his research through collaborative efforts and external grants, with OnlyMarms raising approximately $3,000 US since its inception.
While OnlyFans has provided some financial support, Blumstein encourages supporters to donate directly to UCLA to ensure the continuity of the marmot research project. Recognizing the limitations of relying on OnlyFans as a funding source due to commissions and tax obligations, Blumstein aims to secure additional funding to sustain his research endeavors.
