Brady Tkachuk stood up for his teammate off the ice just as he does on the rink. The Ottawa Senators’ captain strongly condemned online speculation surrounding goaltender Linus Ullmark’s personal leave. General manager Steve Staios had previously addressed the issue, denouncing the spread of false narratives by what he referred to as “trolls” and “sick people.”
Tkachuk expressed his displeasure at the situation, emphasizing the inappropriateness of dragging Ullmark’s family into the matter. The Senators disclosed on December 28 that Ullmark had taken a leave of absence, during which the team struggled with a 2-4-0 record, being outscored 24-15 and landing second from the bottom in the Eastern Conference.
Following two consecutive losses on the road, including a heavy 8-2 defeat by the Colorado Avalanche, the Senators were gearing up to face the reigning Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers, on Saturday night. Players, for the first time, addressed the media locally about the online rumors and Staios’ statement from two days prior.
Staios reiterated the organization’s support for Ullmark, stressing the need for privacy and condemning those spreading baseless claims online. Tkachuk commended Staios for his staunch defense of the team and expressed disbelief at the unfounded rumors circulating.
Senators’ center Tim Stützle affirmed the team’s solidarity with Ullmark, debunking the false information circulating on social media. Head coach Travis Green joined in, highlighting the importance of supporting each other through personal challenges.
In a move to bolster their goaltending depth, the Senators announced the signing of veteran goalie James Reimer to an AHL professional tryout. The team relied on Leevi Merilainen in Ullmark’s absence, with the latter set to start against the Panthers.
Tkachuk emphasized the need for unity, positivity, and a collective effort to secure a crucial victory in the face of their recent struggles.
