University of Waterloo PhD candidate Kaveeshan Thurairajah may not have a Nobel Prize, but he proudly holds an Ig Nobel Prize. The Ig Nobels, a playful spin on the prestigious Nobel Prizes, honor the most unconventional and imaginative research in academia. Thurairajah and his team were awarded the Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their innovative work on creating a urinal design that minimizes splashing.
Recalling the moment when his supervisor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan, shared the exciting news, Thurairajah expressed his initial happiness and surprise. The team developed various urinal prototypes, such as the Nautilus and Cornucopia designs, to address splash reduction and ease of cleaning. According to Thurairajah, the Nautilus design proved to be the most effective solution.
Attending the awards ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his team sported bright yellow raincoats, embracing the quirky spirit of the event. Despite the humorous nature of their research, Thurairajah emphasized the practical value of their work in enhancing public restroom experiences.
In addition to Thurairajah’s team, other Canadian researchers were recognized at the ceremony for their unconventional studies, including investigations into the behavior of upper-class individuals and the use of mosquito proboscises for 3D printing. The Ig Nobel Awards, organized by the Annals of Improbable Research, have moved to Europe after decades in the U.S. to ensure global participation in the celebration of offbeat scientific endeavors.
