They eventually opted to book with another airline at their own expense, which added a five-hour layover in Iceland to their journey back. The couple, regular visitors to Canada, expressed their disappointment, stating that this experience had tarnished their view of the country permanently. They emphasized the need for a better resolution method that does not disrupt the travel plans of Canadians, international visitors, and the image of Canada. Other affected travelers faced similar challenges. Ryan Callbeck, who was part of a group of eight, learned at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday that his return flight to Regina was canceled. Despite being provided a toll-free customer service line, the calls kept disconnecting, leaving them without assistance. Although sympathetic towards the flight attendants, Callbeck was frustrated by the sudden disruption to his long-planned trip and the additional expenses incurred due to extending their stay. Across Canada, 4,287 WestJet flight attendants went on strike due to concerns over compensation and working conditions. The union highlighted that its members are not adequately compensated and are required to perform unpaid tasks such as ground duties before takeoff. WestJet assured affected passengers that they would receive refunds or alternative arrangements where applicable. Officials at Halifax Stanfield International Airport advised passengers with WestJet bookings in the next three days to verify their flight status online before heading to the airport.
